The architecture is interesting. So many buildings were bombed in 1945. A few escaped but so many were destroyed. The rebuilding was a mixture: some were able to be put back together, some were rebuilt using a mix of salvaged material and new (the older material is darker than the new), some were new built in a modernised version of what was there and some completely new. There are huge shopping malls (two within a street of our flat). Our taxi driver in Prague had said there were lots of malls here but we didn’t realise the size of them.
We have 4 nights here so decided to have a late start and just have a wander around. Saw the main buildings on the must see list and discovered where we can get a boat ride in a couple of days time. The human statues were good - only moved when someone put money in their tin - like a coin in the slot toy.
It being Sunday most shops were shut, including the mall and the supermarket- just as well we had bought supplies the day before. Sadly the Meissen shop was closed so we had to just look in the window.
Visited the interesting transport museum
We were going to go to the Green Vault but decided to put that off until tomorrow as we were both feeling a bit tired, but the courtyard of the building was interesting in itself.
Stopped for a refreshing icecream before making our way back. Realised that we had done over 13,000 steps so weren’t as mystified about why we were tired. Took advantage of the cooking facilities and had a simple meal - toasted sandwich.
